Nations and Nationalism: Theories, interpretations, current challenges
Perugia, 15-17 September 2016
Call for papers
During the 1980s and 1990s, the issues relating to nations and nationalism were, especially in Anglo-Saxon academic world, the object of particularly original and innovative, cultural, historical interpretations. In some cases, these triggered vast and lasting intellectual debates. This wave of studies had been partly stimulated by political events – in some cases, by dramatic political events – that bought to light once again the importance of national feelings of belonging after these had come to be deemed as progressively declining. Twenty years after that seminal intellectual phases, nation and nationalism – and their relationships with democracy – still seem to occupy the scene of history, strongly influencing political struggle. But the interest of scholars seems to have lessened. It seems that their capacity to offer innovative interpretations capable of explaining the development and the changing role of nations and nationalism in the contemporary world, has failed.
The two academic journals “Rivista di Politica” and “Storia del pensiero politico” invite proposals and abstracts or a conference focusing on five crucial themes:
1. Nations and nationalism in the history of political thought: authors and currents of thought
2. The nation and the social sciences
3. The nation and national identity: The case of Italy
4. Contemporary theories of nationalism: a critical appraisal
5. Thinking the nation today
The conference will open with the keynote speech by prof. Pierre Manent (Ècole des Hautes Ètudes en Sciences Sociales) on ‘The idea of nation and the historical future of Europe’.
Abstracts of up to 300 words should be submitted to the programme committee at stefano.deluca@unisob.na.it (copyin in direttore@istitutodipolitica.it) before 31 January 2015. Please include a one-page academic CV.
